Cannabigerol (CBG)

Cannabigerol, commonly abbreviated as CBG, is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant. It is often referred to as the “mother of all cannabinoids” because it serves as a precursor from which other cannabinoids are synthesized, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). CBG is present in lower concentrations than THC and CBD in most cannabis strains, which has historically made it less commercially viable; however, its potential therapeutic benefits have spurred increased scientific interest. Like other cannabinoids, CBG interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system but has a different affinity for the CB1 and CB2 receptors compared to THC and CBD. Preliminary research suggests that CBG may have a variety of biological effects, including anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and appetite-stimulating properties, although these effects are not yet fully understood and require more clinical research to be substantiated. As cannabis research evolves, CBG is becoming more prominent for its potential medicinal applications, leading to the development of high-CBG cannabis strains and specific CBG products.
